Nov 15, 2018Vancouver Experiencing Increasing Demand in Passive House Construction

In recent years, Passive House has been gaining ground as a greener, more energy efficient way of building and living well. With no active heating system, it does not require a lot of power to heat or cool the home. According to the International Passive House Association, there are more than 60,000 residential and non-residential units in existence worldwide. With The City of Vancouver’s commitment to make Vancouver the greenest city in the world by 2020, it’s no surprise Vancouver is leading the way in Passive House construction.

Chris Higgins of the City of Vancouver says, “Over the past three years, we have seen a significant increase in Passive Homes being built. We now have over 238,000 square feet under construction, 2 million square feet in various stages of permitting, and a further 1.2 million square feet at the enquiry stage.”

With all this new demand, comes a need for a broad base of knowledge and expertise. And it’s not just anyone who can build or design a Passive House. Higgins adds, “There are strict standards, and a range of design components that need to be met in order to be considered and certified as a Passive House.”

So if you’re looking to be a part of this “greener” movement and want to build a Passive House, make sure you do your research and find an architect and builder who specialize and have experience in this area.
